Description of Workshops

Managing Disruptive Behavior
The goal of the Managing Disruptive Behavior workshop is to offer parents and professions tools to utilize in addressing maladaptive behavior. The following concepts will be introduced: defining problem behavior, identifying the function of behaviors utilizing effective teaching procedures, and implementing behavioral procedures such as: Accepting No, the Promise Procedure, Transition- Interruption, and the Count and Mand. Attendees can expect to leave this workshop with ideas on how to better assess disruptive behavior and procedures to improve appropriate behavior.

Getting First Words

The Getting First Words workshop will identify some of the most effective ways to assist children in communicating their needs. Key elements such as pairing, motivation, reinforcement, shaping, and expanding interests will be addressed. While the goal for all learners is to use the spoken word, some learners need to begin with other response forms. We will address the benefits and pitfalls of alternative response forms such as sign language and PECS. Participants will have the opportunity to learn though watching multiple videos that illustrate key elements of getting first words.

Toilet Training Tips-

The Toilet Training Tips workshop shares information to help parents and professionals implement positive procedures in toilet training. Elements that will be addressed include: pairing the bathroom with reinforcement, schedules, most to least prompting, shaping chaining, and prompt fading. We hope that parents and professionals leave this workshop with the motivation and information to begin successful potty training.

Snapshot of Verbal Behavior

The Snapshot of Verbal Behavior is a brief introduction to Applied Behavior Analysis with a focus of B.F. Skinner’s Analysis of Verbal Behavior. The agenda includes: philosophy of verbal behavior, manding, learning across the verbal operants, motivative operation, natural environment teaching, and effective teaching procedures. This is an excellent workshop for parents and professionals who are new to Verbal Behavior and need a place to begin this journey
